Football: What the win over Notre Dame means

Well, technically, Pitt's 27-22 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday means very little for the Panthers and their quest for a Big East championship. The win against the Fighting Irish, a non-conference opponent, helped the Panthers improve to 9-1 overall and move up to No. 9 in the BCS standings — their highest ranking ever in the BCS — but they are still 5-0 in Big East play.

After this weekend's action, the Panthers sit a half-game behind No. 5 Cincinnati (10-0 overall, 6-0 Big East) in the conference. The Bearcats' Friday night win over West Virginia eliminated the Mountaineers chances of winning the Big East. The Panthers head to West Virginia on the Friday after Thanksgiving and it's true that that game will also mean nothing in terms of Pitt's attempt to win the Big East.

The Panthers and Bearcats' are set for a season finale game in Pittsburgh on Dec. 5 — the game will determine the Big East title. The Mountaineers could defeat Pitt and Cincinnati could lose to Illinois, a non-conference opponent, in roughly two weeks, but it won't mean anything in terms of these two teams chances at winning the conference.

Because of that, there are three scenarios that will decide which team earns the Big East's automatic BCS Bowl bid, which looks like it will be the Sugar Bowl:

— Pitt wins the Big East championship outright if it defeats West Virginia on Nov. 27 and Cincinnati on Dec. 5.
— Cincinnati wins the Big East championship outright if it defeats Pitt on Dec. 5.
— Pitt and Cincinnati would share the Big East championship if West Virginia defeats Pitt and Pitt defeats Cincinnati. In this case, Pitt would earn the automatic BCS berth based on head-to-head results.

So, it looks like it's a fairly simple situation for both teams: win and you're in(to a BCS Bowl game).
