Basketball: Pitt wins narrowly, but Syracuse can't say the same

As Jay pointed out yesterday, "A win is a win. And a scrimmage is just that — a scrimmage. Those games are played for a reason. Its to grade a team's preseason performance and what they need to improve on. In the case of Pitt, it expects to win handily. For Slippery Rock, a loss."

And while Pitt did beat Slippery Rock, it only won 75-64 and trailed for a majority of the first half. A school like Pitt should win easily against Slippery Rock, which uses this type of game mainly to see if it can hang with Division I talent.

"We're really appreciative to play a team like Pitt, an Elite 8 team," Slippery Rock coach Kevin Reynolds said after the game.

If Pitt were to lose, it wouldn't really matter. These games don't count in the standings. All it would do is cast a dark cloud of embarrassment over Pitt heading into the season.

After tonight, Syracuse has to deal with that cloud.

The No. 25-ranked Orange lost to Division II cross-town rival Le Moyne 82-79 at the Carrier Dome.

"It's embarrassing to ourselves and our fans," Syracuse guard Andy Rautins told the Associated Press. "It wasn't luck that they won. They came out and beat us fair and square."

It's the first preseason loss for Syracuse in six years, when it lose to the Harlem Globetrotters. The Orange were picked to finish sixth in the Big East in the preseason media poll after finishing ninth last season.

The Orange are in a somewhat similar predicament as the Panthers. Syracuse, like Pitt, lost its top three scorers from last year-- Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris and Eric Devendorf.

Like I said earlier, this is just an exhibition game and thus shouldn't be taken as an accurate indicator of how a team's season will go. But still, this certainly isn't the best way to head into a season for Syracuse.
